Hi there, just found the forum and it seems a great place for my quest to begin.
Short summary of my life so far.....
20 years ago - studied at college, got the A levels, got offered the place to study Sports Science but declined and started in financial services industry, whilst playing top level amateur and then later professional rugby league. Injury forces retirement in 1997 and I recover and then start triathlon and now race Ironman distance races amongst others.....
Life is blown apart financially and I have the chance to evaluate what I want and I am now looking at retraining and studying from home with a view to becoming a Personal Trainer in about 5 years time.....
I have no idea where to begin and what courses to go for.....all my studying will have to be in the evenings as I will still be working full time.
If anyone can help me then that would be fantastic.
Cheers

Many Fitness Training companies now offer study at home courses
e.g. Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer Courses and Training - Global Fitness Education (http://globalfitnesseducation.com)
have a look and see what you think
also the PTHub is a great place for you to seek advice from other current personal trainers too and im sure you'll get some more advice over the week!

Hi Martin and welcome.
I decided to change my career earlier this year and enrolled on a personal trainer course which I do in my spare time. Its not easy when you work fulltime and have family commitments but its possible. Its a also a bit worrying as I'm almost 40 and part of me wonders whether I'm doing the right thing.
Have a look around at the different courses you can do and do a bit of research on finding one that suits you.
Have you decided on what you want to do once you become qualified? Work in a gym or go freelance?

Pete,
Thanks for your advice and it sounds like we are both about the same....I turn 40 next year.
I am also going to progress my Triathlon coaching awards, so the plan really is to combine the Personal Training with Triathlon and operate a freelance service at first and then see how that develops.
What courses are you doing and if you dont mind me asking what kind of costs are they and how many hours a week do you study.
Cheers

Martin, I'll send you some info on the course I'm doing privately as I'm not sure whether I should be mentioning one particular company on here.
I'm thinking about providing other services as I'm very much into running, martial arts and hill-walking. I'm still in the planning stage but my thoughts are to have maybe a self defence class, slimming class and maybe something like circuit training or pilates. I would also do the 1-2-1 personal training and maybe even something to do with hill-walking. I need to plan a lot more because ultimately, I need to pay the mortgage and I think it will be very difficult to begin with until you build up a client base.

Thanks for that Pete, and yeah I think it will be hard at first. My plan is really to start by doing it in the evenings and see how it goes.......not financially in a position to make a clean break, so it will be a suck it and see situation.
Look forward to receiving the info
Cheers
